How May I Help You?

I love love love love working with all of you!  I would love to plan something specific with you.  Several of the schools now have a mobile cart.  I would love to plan a lesson together.  I would love to meet with you first during your planning time to put the lesson together.  Then we can schedule a time to carry out the lesson.

PVES and TES:  If you want to plan together we could meet in the morning before school or after school.

AES and CES:  You two are so close together.  Any Thursday or Friday I could arrange to meet you.  I have found that most of CES wants my help with lessons in the afternoon.  AES wants my help in the morning plus their schedule has them on an ABC week.  This has been difficult since I was scheduled on a AB week so I have decide to try and make every effort to be more flexible.   Maybe we can get more lessons scheduled.

Email me if you want to do a lesson together.

By the way, have I told you lately how much I love working with you all?
New Lesson Development

Betsy Brown and I have worked together to create a second/third grade differentiated technology lesson on cubic measurement based on the NTTI method.  Please ask us for a copy!
She and I are also putting together a differentiated lesson on the Civil War for 4th and 5th grade.  We will let you know when this is completed.
There are new Inspiration Documents as well as scavenger hunts for the Revolutionary War for 4th and 5th grade.
Ask me for the second grade sort on China and Egypt.  Last year Gail Moore did a great Inspiration template on Cells.
I developed a guided notetaking PowerPoint lesson for Third and Fourth Grade on Habitats.
The Phases of the Moon is coming up.  I have just published an NTTI lesson on this SOL.  I have a conference in March to present this lesson.  I would love an opportunity to practice with students before presenting my lesson.
Most of our lessons are posted on the school's server.
The scavenger hunts are posted on our portal. If you would like to take a look at any of these lessons, let me know.  They may give you an idea of what you can ask from me.

Staff Developments

The Staff Development on PowerPoint Games that was repeated went very well.  Julie Steele and I have another workshop on Creating Web Quests Thursday, February 16th at the High School

Gail Moore and I have Staff Developments coming up in March on Excel and Creating Web Pages.  Check the County Web Site to sign up for these.

Lesson Ideas

This month's highlight:

United Streaming

United Streaming is a service purchased for us by the EdTech Consortium.  From United Streaming you can download SOL based video clips that will coordinate with your lesson.  You also have a a library of clip art from the videos that you can use for games, flashcards, or worksheets.  While you are logged on, check out the daily calendar.  Clicking on the daily calendar gives you a mini history lesson by highlighting news based clips of events that occurred on that day.  Ask me or email me if you do not know the login information for your school.  I can also help you by downloading clips and burning them to a cd for you.  If you wish for me to do the downloading and burning, please send me the SOL that you are working on.

Featured Links

TEACHERS & STAFF:  I have tried to capture the best sites to tie into this nine week's  Virginia Standards of Learning.  If you need something more on a particular topic, please email me. Please take a few moments to browse not only these but the links you will find on the portaportal pages of colleagues.  You can get to their portals by clicking here.  If you wish to have links for a special lesson, let me know.  I will be happy to assist you!  All of these links will be added to the Amherst County SOL Links Page.

Gail and I noticed that our links page is getting rather long and involved.  We will be working on this over the next few weeks to reorganize and make things easier to find.  Please be paitient with us during this time.

This month:  Strategic Reading Tools using Inspiration

Activate Prior Knowledge using graphics to .  Ex.  reading a story about a farm.  What things are found on a farm?

Question-Answer Relationship- QAR- Literal to Inferential-  In a text box write a text in large font size such as, "The house was red."  Provide 3 separate bubbles with a different answer for a multiple choice.  The choices could be red, yellow and blue.  Ask the question, "What was the color of the house?"   Student moves the correct bubble, red, over the top of the word red in the text box.  ALSO provide answers in circles.  Students are asked a question & choose correct answer.  If correct, change to their team's shape.  Most shapes at the end win.

Graphic Organizer- Well, that's a natural for Kidspiration.

KWHL Plus- What we Know, What we Want to find out, How we will find out, What we Learned.- Make the graphic organizer.

SQ3R- Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review.  Create a flow chart with Inspiration to guide students through process.  Make a handout for students to check off as each step is completed.

Visual Reading Guide- In a text box write a short piece for students to read and add a graphic.  Ask students why the picture is important to the piece.

Fix up Strategies - With Inspiration list strategies that students have been taught to use.  Make a hard copy for each student.  As student reads put a check in each bubble of the strategy the child used.

Visualization - In a text box write sentences such as, "When it got cool, the tree turned to a bright orange.  Then the apple changed to a golden yellow."  Then provide a tree and the apple on the screen.  Ask students if these are the right color according to what was read.  Change the colors to fit the sentences.

Basic Signal Words - Provide super groupers which are labeled Who, What, Where, Why, When, How.  Let students put graphics in correct super grouper.

Advanced Signal Words - Compose a piece using advanced signal words.  Then put signal words in a bubble each.  Students take the words and put them over the words in the piece.  Read the words as they place them.
